Eagle: A Poem
Warblings, Summer 2014

Bald Eagle
Bald Eagle

How fortunate I am to have a passion.

Of course, I am not alone.
There are many of us.

Armed with heavy camera gear,
enthusiasm
and extraordinary patience,
we search the sky – often for hours –
hoping to see and capture something
spectacular.

Just before giving up – calling it a day –
a speck appears on the horizon
and, in seconds, we behold the white head, neck and tail feathers ...
the unmistakable plumage amd countenance of our country's national bird,

THE AMERICAN BALD EAGLE.

Time appears to stand still.
We are mesmerized by the aerial display and magnificence of the eagle
but not so much that we neglect to focus and shoot.

Wings outstretched, the eagle appears immense.
Once it approaches its tree and nest,
it chooses a limb and drops
down
for the landing.

We head home, thankful for the thrilling spectacle that we have witnessed –
aware that our participation has been a privilege.
