Recollection
Warblings, Summer 2015

The juvenile eagle made its way toward the tip of the branch and then it began to exercise,
jumping way up high and flapping its enormous wings
over and over and over again.

The scenario reminded me of
a happy child on a trampoline.

"This bird really wants to fly,"
I thought
"but it is too young and it's just not ready yet.
Maybe next week."

All of a sudden it flew to the top of the tree
and then it took off in what appeared to be a large circle.
At first I lost sight of it but it soon returned and made its way back,
landing on its practice branch.

Bald Eagle first flight? photo by Gloria WagenknechtI was almost breathless.

Did I witness its maiden voyage?

Probably.

Would I ever forget what I had just seen?

Never.

One of nature's miracles had just occurred and I was lucky enough
to see it.
